Back when COVID first hit, I remember reading some post on Instagram that said how those of us in stepfamilies are uniquely positioned to skillfully navigate all the uncertainty that goes along with living in such a tumultuous time. Apparently because we're already so used to constant last-minute changes. Not to mention being bombarded by a million factors outside of our control.
I guess if constant change and a total lack of control are things someone can get used to, then... yes. We're practically experts. However, I'm pretty sure that every one of us would happily trade that expertise for lives that felt more predictable and steady and controllable.
We spend a lot of time fuming at the stress and uncertainty associated with being stepparents. Why can't this just be easy?
I get it. I wish this road had been easier too.
At the same time, all the stress and uncertainty associated with being a stepmom has taught me how to prioritize my emotional health and well-being, recognize when I'm headed straight toward burnout, and make time to decompress and reset.
I’m thankful to have that awareness now, even though I wish I'd learned those skills under less trial-by-fire circumstances. I'm thankful I hopped on this crazy ride with Dan, thankful for everything I've learned along the way, and thankful for all the twists and turns that brought us right here. 'Cause I really really like life right here.
