Stepparenting is the hardest thing I've ever done, in part because I felt so isolated and alone trying to navigate this new and mind-bogglingly confusing role. When I look back, though, I can see that I had help all along, even though I didn't quite realize it at the time.
A couple really helpful books on stepparenting. A couple supremely unhelpful books — which in turn sparked the idea of starting Blended Family Frappé in the first place, so actually they helped in a totally different way.
Many online and IRL friends who listened and gave well-meaning advice. Generous family members who cheerfully celebrated our made-up holidays with us on whatever dates the kids' custody schedules allowed. Compassionate therapists. Calming yoga teachers. Zelda, the video game that helped us connect when there was no other way we could connect.
As I start listing all the unlikely ways and places I found support and solace along this oh-so-bumpy road, I am so thankful. I may not have recognized that support surrounded me at the time, but I see those lighthouses now that eventually led me here and I could not be more grateful. 🧡
TODAY'S PROMPT:
